The Public Forum Side Events, Exhibitions and Poster Sessions are a significant part of the World Conference. They promote a shared responsibility of reducing risk and building resilience.

Side Events, Exhibitions and Poster Sessions

The Public Forum with over 350 planned events, 200 exhibition booths and 120 poster sessions will be held over a number of venues during the period of the conference and is open to conference participants and the general public. The main objectives are to raise awareness on disaster risk reduction and building of resilience of nations and communities and contribute to knowledge promotion on disaster risk reduction, resilience and reconstruction. There will be particular reflection and lessons from the reconstruction and recovery of the Tohoku region following the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011.

The application period for Side Events (such as symposiums, seminars and workshops) , Exhibition Booths and Poster Exhibitions closed on September 16.

  1. Great East Japan Earthquake Forum
    Government of Japan and Sendai Committee for the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction invite prominent speakers from home and abroad, and conduct five days consecutive sessions on the theme of “Sharing Experiences and Lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake with the World” with the aim of having a prospect of building back better and a new level of disaster resiliency and sustainability.
  2. Thematic Pavilions
    a. Civil Society Collaboration and DRR Various organizations conduct symposiums, workshops and exhibitions about the report of activities that various citizens tackled challenges that became apparent in the earthquake, and the cases of cooperation of the affected areas with international organizations. Thereby it would be promoted that the exchange of information between national and international organizations, and opportunities to know each other better.
    b. Gender and DRR Various organizations working on disaster risk reduction and support activities from the perspective of gender equality conduct symposiums. A space will be set up for participants to freely visit, exchange information, conduct exhibitions, and hold mini-events.
  3. Exhibition of DRR Industry in Sendai
    Disaster-related technologies and products which not only help in the event of disasters but improve the comfort, economy and environment, etc. in peacetime are exhibited. The aim is to promote disaster mitigation capabilities of the world through expansion of the DRR industrial market.
  4. Outdoor Exhibition
    Sendai Committee for the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction will hold two outdoor events, which everyone is welcome to join.
    a. Sendai Disaster Prevention Square 2015: Exhibition of fire fighting vehicles, music stages, projection of pictures on the theme of reconstruction from the Great East Earthquake, and various booths exhibited by the private sector will lead to an experience where visitors can learn about DRR through hands-on experiences.
    b. International Exchange Square: International cuisine and interaction can be enjoyed in the 'World Kitchen' . Participatory workshops and events on international exchange will be held in the JICA booth. In NGO's "People's Pavilion" information center, gathering space, seminar space, etc. will be available.
  5. Tohoku Reconstruction and DRR Pavilion
    Sendai Committee for the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction conducts the exhibition on recovery, reconstruction and disaster risk reduction of Tohoku, cooperating with Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima Prefecture and municipalities of Miyagi Prefecture. This pavilion share experiences and lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake with the World and appeal broadly the future of Sendai and Tohoku.
  6. Events by Municipalities Affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake
    Various events shall be conducted by municipalities in Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima which are recovering from the Great East Japan Earthquake in their respective regions with the aim of sharing experiences and lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake with the World. A detailed list of events, their locations, and contact points will be shared online.
