The Institute for Social and Environmental Transition-International (ISET), USA

The Institute for Social and Environmental Transition-International (ISET) , based in Boulder, Colorado, is a non-profit that over the past 17 years has been at the forefront of catalysing change in social-ecological systems, striving to ensure a more resilient and equitable future. Through research, training and implementation activities, it seeks to improve understanding and elevate the level of dialogue and practice as society responds to natural resource, environmental and social challenges.

ISET serves as a framework for equal collaboration among individuals and organisations in the North and South alike. It has offices in the USA, Thailand, Vietnam, and India, and two independent sister organisations, ISET-Nepal in Kathmandu and ISET-Pakistan in Islamabad. Its broader network includes partner organisations and locally based associates in each of these locations, enabling them to work across disciplinary and contextual boundaries, and collaborate on complex systems issues relating to climate and disaster resilience. ISET's particular focus is on strategies to address the fundamental challenges that dynamic change
processes pose for marginalised populations and those who lack the resources to adapt. Through its work, it brings together theoretical and scientific insights with social engagement, local knowledge, and shared learning to identify practical strategies at the local level and to foster the growth of applied knowledge. By enlisting the participation of a host of relevant stakeholders -- local people, local policy makers, private sector organisations, and governments -- ISET builds tangible community capacity. Shared learning is not only key within individual projects, but also between projects within the network so that information and experiences are also shared internationally, especially as regions integrate globally.
