Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), Thailand

Founded in 1986 in Thailand to help meet ever-escalating emergency response needs, the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is a respected regional hub that works to share knowledge and build capacity across Asia, with a strong focus on 26 nations in South and Southeast Asia. Over the ensuing three decades, it has trained some 13,800 practitioners from countries across its region and beyond, just over half of them government officials. From the outset, it has been driven by a desire to create and grow a culture of safety in communities, hand in hand with sustainable development.

In 28 years of existence, ADPC has significantly expanded its programmes as well as its resource base. It currently has around 100 professional staff employed in its Bangkok office, with another four country offices in operation in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Lao PDR and Cambodia. It currently offers seven regional flagship-training courses, 10 customised training courses, and a host of specialised project-based training programmes at regional, national and local levels. To complement training needs, it has produced primers, training manuals, and field practitioners’ guidebooks, which have set standard in disaster risk reduction.
